Marta Byrska-Bishop joined the New York Genome Center in November 2017 as a Bioinformatics Scientist and was promoted to Senior Bioinformatics Scientist in 2020. Her role at the NYGC focuses primarily on the maintenance, improvement, and operation of the germline sequencing analysis pipeline, as well as genomic data analysis. Marta obtained her Ph.D. at the Pennsylvania State University, where she worked in the field of functional genomics in the lab of Dr. Ross Hardison. At Penn State, Marta discovered important aspects of the mechanism of blood disorders associated with Down Syndrome through analysis of transcriptome and next-generation sequencing data from patient stem cells. Prior to joining the NYGC, Marta completed her postdoctoral work with Dr. Marylyn Ritchie at Geisinger, as part of the Geisinger–Regeneron Genetic Center’s “DiscovEHR” collaboration. At Geisinger, Marta worked on large scale genetic and phenotype data analysis. She contributed to the implementation of the germline sequencing variant calling pipeline on a cloud-based platform, DNAnexus, and she developed a probabilistic graphical model of disease state for disease risk prediction based on electronic health record data.
